An 86-year-old Hightstown man was the sole occupant and died at the scene, authorities said.

CRANBURY, NJ — An 86-year-old Hightstown man died Tuesday, after his vehicle crossed the median on Route 130 North near Old Trenton Road and struck a tree, Cranbury Township Police Chief Giuseppe N. DeChiara said Thursday.

Cranbury police responded at about 3:07 p.m. to a report of a crash. A preliminary investigation found the driver had crossed the median from the southbound lanes, traveled through the northbound lanes, and struck a tree on the shoulder, DeChiara said.

Officers arrived to find the vehicle heavily damaged and engulfed in flames, police said. DeChiara said the vehicle "was split apart and sustained catastrophic damage."

The driver, who DeChiara confirmed was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

DeChiara said no further information will be released until the investigation is complete and all associated reports have been finalized.

The crash remains under investigation.
