MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — With about 50 days of summer remaining as of Aug. 3, Middlesex County is encouraging residents and visitors to squeeze in as much as possible before the season winds down — from Broadway musicals under the stars to Revolutionary War history and local farm visits.
"Summer is the perfect time for people to explore their interests, spend time outdoors, and create lasting memories with family and friends," Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios said in a statement.
Commissioner Charles E. Tomaro, chair of the Infrastructure Management Committee, said the county's parks and public spaces become community gathering points during the summer months.
The Cornelius Low House Museum's "Caught in the Crossfire: Divided Loyalties in Middlesex County" exhibit runs through Dec. 31, 2028, featuring never-before-exhibited artifacts and interactive displays on the county's Revolutionary War role. Over at East Jersey Old Town Village, costumed interpreters bring living history to life for free Wednesday through Sunday. There's also a self-guided Middlesex County History Guide for anyone who wants to explore landmarks at their own pace.
The Plays-in-the-Park series at Roosevelt Park in Edison wraps up its run of "Guys and Dolls" on Aug. 8. The free, rotating Music-in-the-Park concert series continues through Labor Day weekend at Raritan Bay Waterfront Park, Thompson Park and Spring Lake Park, with a Children's Summer Series featuring SuziMusic at Fords Park on Aug. 4 and Joseph Medwick Park on Aug. 18.
Culture lovers can also catch FolkLIVE's New Jersey Folk Festival 51st Anniversary on Aug. 29, followed by a Mexican Folkloric Festival on Sept. 12.
With more than 21 county parks, thousands of acres of preserved open space and the 3.5-mile Middlesex Greenway, there's plenty of room to roam. Kids can join the self-guided Junior Rangers program, and dog owners have their own Bark Rangers program. Golfers have three public courses to choose from — Tamarack in East Brunswick, Meadows in Plainsboro and Raritan Landing in Piscataway — and local farms and markets are open for fresh produce and seasonal activities.
The Senior Art Contest and Show runs through Aug. 13 at Middlesex College's Studio Art Gallery, the Middlesex County Fair runs Aug. 3-9 at the Middlesex County Fairgrounds in East Brunswick, and a Beginner Interpretive Hikes Series kicks off Sept. 10 at Heathcote Meadows Preserve in South Brunswick.
