Officers found the driver, Kenneth Harada, 25, of San Antonio, Texas, showing signs of impairment. He was evaluated at the scene and charged with DUI. South Brunswick EMS took him to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Officers also found a handgun and metal knuckles in the car, police said. Harada was charged with having prohibited weapons and unlawful possession of a weapon and Driving Under the Influence.

He was lodged in the Middlesex County Correctional Center pending his first court appearance.

The Monmouth Junction Fire Department said the car struck and punctured one of the tractor-trailer's diesel fuel saddle tanks. The damage caused a significant fuel leak that was flowing into a storm drain, the department said.

Crews from Engine 1, Support Unit 207 and Engine 204 contained the spill until the Middlesex County Hazardous Materials Unit arrived. The exit ramp from Route 130 to Ridge Road was closed for two hours during the cleanup.
