"I am proud to share that the Township has officially passed a resolution recognizing October as Hindu Heritage Month in South Brunswick," Mayor Charlie Carley wrote on Facebook. "We are remarkably fortunate to have many peoples of many faiths who contribute so much to our town's success, culture, and shared values."

The resolution says the Hindu American community has contributed to the vitality of New Jersey, South Brunswick and the nation. It notes that Hinduism is the world's third-largest religion, with about 1 billion followers worldwide and roughly 3 million in the United States.

It also says that during October, Hindu communities across New Jersey and the country celebrate their heritage by focusing on culture and spiritual traditions rooted in India.

By adopting the resolution, the mayor and council said they want to increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of the Hindu American community.
