SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — Flags across South Brunswick are flying at half-staff in memory of Robert Von Thun Sr., a longtime resident and third-generation farmer who died at age 96.

Mayor Charlie Carley ordered all municipal flags lowered in his honor, the township announced on Saturday.

Family and community members knew Von Thun as "Pop Pop." The township said he spent his life working the land and played a key role in shaping South Brunswick's farming heritage.

The Von Thun family farm dates back to 1913. Under his care, it grew from a traditional potato and grain operation into a well-known farm market and a popular stop for Jersey Fresh produce, agritourism and family traditions, the township said.

In 1986, Von Thun went into partnership with his son, Bob Von Thun Jr., and the two grew the farm into a community landmark that has welcomed generations of local families. He retired in 2004.

Von Thun's Country Farm Market paid tribute to him on social media.

"As we remember Robert Von Thun Sr., lovingly known as 'Pop Pop,' we celebrate the generations of hard work, family, and dedication that helped shape our farm into what it is today," the farm market wrote. "His legacy is woven into the roots of Von Thun's Country Farm Market and will continue to live on for generations to come."

Carley offered condolences on behalf of the township.

"Robert Von Thun Sr. embodied the grit, humility, and generosity of South Brunswick's agricultural roots," Carley said. "For decades, his steadfast commitment to farming helped nourish and unite our township. He didn't just build a thriving farm; he helped cultivate the very heart of our community."

"On behalf of the Township Council and all of South Brunswick, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the entire Von Thun family as we honor a life so exceptionally well-lived," he added.

The family has invited visitors to the farm to stop by the Heritage Barn to honor his memory and look back at the history of Von Thun's Country Farm Market.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, at M.J. Murphy Funeral Home, 616 Ridge Road in Monmouth Junction. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, followed by burial at Dayton Cemetery.

Instead of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to The Dayton Presbyterian Church or The Grace Presbyterian Church.
