SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — About 45 residents, advocates and local leaders walked together in South Brunswick last month to raise awareness of domestic violence and show support for survivors.

The South Brunswick Commission on Women held its annual Domestic Violence Awareness Walk, "Break the Silence Against Domestic Violence," on Oct. 25 at the Friends Theatre at the South Brunswick Public Library, 110 Kingston Lane in Monmouth Junction. The library co-hosted the event.

Mayor Charlie Carley spoke at the walk about the township's commitment to supporting survivors.

"We are here, and most of us are safe, so we walk for someone who is not safe," Carley said. "We are glad to be standing in this light, together, where everyone can see. That is all understanding ever is: one person beside another, so that neither is alone."

Deputy Mayor Ken Bierman, Councilwoman Jo Hochman and Councilwoman Patty Germain also attended.

The event featured guest speakers from Women Aware, CASA of Middlesex County, Manavi and the South Brunswick Police Department.

"Overall, we are very pleased with the outcome of this year's walk," said Germain, the council liaison to the Commission on Women. "We received fantastic feedback from both our speakers and attendees, including insightful contributions from Women Aware, CASA of Middlesex, Manavi, and the SBPD."

Germain said the commission hopes to draw a bigger crowd next time.

"While we were glad to have about 45 dedicated participants join us alongside members of the Commission, our goal moving forward is to expand our outreach and bring even more of the community together for future events," she said.

The commission thanked the residents, organizations and volunteers who took part.
