Armed Robbery In North Brunswick; Suspects Cause Rt. 1 Crash

There was an armed robbery attempt at a business on Georges Road Thursday night, and the suspects caused mayhem fleeing onto Rt. 1.

NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — There was an armed robbery attempt at a business on Georges Road Thursday night in North Brunswick, and the suspects caused mayhem getting away — driving into police officers and colliding with other cars as it fled on Rt. 1, police said. A police officer was also hit by a passing car in the Rt. 1 southbound lanes during a struggle to arrest one of the suspects, police said.

Police received a 911 call at approximately 8:52 p.m. Thursday of a robbery in progress at a business at 689 Georges Road in North Brunswick. When police arrived, multiple suspects fled the scene both on foot and by car. That car drove at police, attempting to hit the officers as it drove off. The car did strike one of the officers, but he was not injured.

"There was a weapon involved, but we are not releasing any details about the type of weapon at this time," said Capt. Brian Hoiberg of the North Brunswick police.

The suspects on foot were also chased by police through a residential neighborhood in North Brunswick, and then onto the area of Rt. 1 and Silverline Drive. Police said they caught up with one of the suspects, and there was a physical struggle on Rt. 1. The suspect was taken into custody.

However, during the struggle and arrest, one North Brunswick police officer was hit by a passerby vehicle while in the southbound lanes of Rt. 1 south. He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson, where he was treated for his injuries and later released. As the suspect car was driving off, it also collided with another car on Rt. 1 and the driver of that car was injured, although not seriously.

The getaway car has not yet been located by police.

One of the victims of the robbery remains in the hospital being treated for injuries sustained at the hands of the suspects. Another suspect has since been taken into custody, as well.
