Boy, 2, Dies After Ingesting Methadone In South Brunswick

Lynn Bergans, 34, of South Brunswick has been charged with causing the death of her 2-year-old son after he ingested her methadone.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — A South Brunswick mother has been charged with causing the death of her 2-year-old son after he ingested her methadone.

Lynn Bergans, 34, of South Brunswick was arrested and charged Tuesday with reckless manslaughter and endangering the welfare of the child in the second degree.

Bergans was charged during an investigation by Detective Timothy Hoover of the South Brunswick Police Department and Detective David Abromaitis of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

On May 15 of this year, South Brunswick Police responded to Sandhill Road in South Brunswick to find an unresponsive two-year-old boy. Efforts to revive the child were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead.

During the investigation, it was determined that the child ingested a combination of water and methadone, which was prescribed to the mother.

Toxicology results confirmed that the child died from a methadone overdose. Bergans is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center pending her initial court appearance in New Brunswick.
