Pedestrian Killed On Route 1 in South Brunswick: Authorities

An accident killed a person on a major New Jersey highway Thursday night, authorities said, which closed the road for hours.

A Middlesex County woman was struck and killed by a vehicle on Route 1 Thursday night in South Brunswick, police said.

An investigation by officers with South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau and detectives from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the 65-year-=old woman was crossing Route 1 at Deans Lane at 9:56 pm.

The woman was walking across the northbound lanes of Route 1 when she was struck by a 2016 Subaru Impreza driven by a 30-year-old Piscataway man.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Subaru stopped at the scene, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Raymond Hayducka of the South Brunswick Police Department, in a release.

Route 1 northbound was closed from 10 p.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday as a result of the investigation.

The Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital paramedics, Monmouth Junction Fire Department, New Jersey Department of Transportation, and the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the call.

No names were revealed by authorities.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed. Investigators have spoken to some witnesses and they're asking anyone with information to contact South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Officer Jesse Blake at (732) 329-4000 ext. 7472.
