Car Strikes 2 Utility Poles, Overturns In South Brunswick Tuesday

The crash caused Route 1 to be closed for hours on Tuesday. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital and is listed in 'good condition.'

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — A 44-year-old was injured after his car crashed into utility poles in South Brunswick, resulting in the closure of Route 1 for hours on Tuesday morning.

At 9:24 a.m. a single-vehicle crash took place on Route 1 North, near the ShopRite by Route 522.

The car veered off the roadway and struck two utility poles and overturned, South Brunswick Police said.

According to investigation, the 44-year-old driver had "intentionally ran into the utility poles in an attempt to harm himself," police said.

The vehicle was going approximately 60 mph when he veered off and stuck the utility poles. The driver was taken by South Brunswick EMS and paramedics to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

He is listed in good condition and undergoing an evaluation, police said.

The crash brought wires down which blocked the highway. The highway was reopened around 12 p.m. PSEG crews remain on the scene making repairs, authorities said.
