SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — A South Brunswick police officer escaped injury Saturday when a tractor-trailer hit his car on Route 1 while he was on a traffic assignment, police said.

The crash happened at 2:40 a.m. as the officer was on the side of Route 1 with his lights activated, South Brunswick police said in a tweet.

Police said the truck driver was distracted at the time of the crash and hit more than 50 road cones and an arrow sign board before hitting the patrol car.

The crash happened on northbound Route 1 near the border of Plainsboro.

Video shows the tractor-trailer come to a halt after it blasts through the sign board and the cones and the patrol car, leaving debris including the sign frame scattered in the lane.

Police did not release the truck driver's name or what charges have been filed against the driver.

New Jersey law requires drivers to slow down and move over when a vehicle is stopped on the side of the road. Violations of the law can result in a fine of at least $100 to as much as $500.
