Loose Tire Slams Windshield, Injures Driver In South Brunswick

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — A 59-year-old woman was seriously injured Sunday after a tire came loose from another vehicle, crossed the median on Route 1 and crashed through her windshield, according to South Brunswick police.

The woman, a Teaneck resident, was driving south on Route 1 between Beekman Road and Sand Hills Road when the tire detached from a vehicle traveling north, bounced over the concrete median and struck her sedan's windshield, police said.

Emergency crews spent about 30 minutes extricating the woman from the wreckage, according to police. She was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive, police said.

The driver of the vehicle that lost the tire, a 19-year-old from East Windsor, was issued a summons for failure to maintain a vehicle, police said. That driver was not injured.
