South Brunswick PD got phone calls Tuesday about a man driving a backhoe on New Road, drinking beer and swerving all over the road.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - A Franklin Park man was arrested Tuesday after police said he was found drunk, with a bottle of Jack Daniels and a bottle of vodka, while driving a backhoe down New Road in South Brunswick Township. It is not known why William Campbell, 56, of Franklin Park, was driving the backhoe at the time. Dash cam of the swerving backhoe and the subsequent stop has been released by the South Brunswick PD.

Starting at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, South Brunswick Police began receiving phone calls about a man driving a backhoe on New Road near Rt. 1, while drinking beer and swerving all over the road. Officer Robert Rask was in the area and followed the driver, Campbell, as he drove the backhoe west down New Road. Officer Rask saw the backhoe swerving onto the road's shoulder, and Campbell even appeared slouched over the wheel as he drove, Rask said.

The officer pulled the backhoe over at the Kendall Park Fire Department headquarters, where he detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Campbell's breath and recovered a bottle of Jack Daniels and a vodka bottle from him, Rask said. Campbell also admitted he did not have a valid driver’s license, police said. Officer Rask had the driver perform field sobriety tests and after those tests, Campbell was arrested for driving while intoxicated. He was also issued summonses for careless driving, failing to maintain a lane, and having an open alcohol container. In addition, he was charged with driving while suspended as a result of a DWI conviction which is a 4th degree crime. Campbell has seven prior DWI convictions dating back to 1980.
