Fake Staff Emails Target South Brunswick School Families

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — The South Brunswick School District is warning families about fraudulent emails circulating in the community that falsely claim to be from district staff members, Superintendent Bernard F. Bragen Jr. said in a letter earlier this week.

The messages may request money, gift cards, personal information or funds for classroom supplies, according to the letter. Bragen said the district and its staff would not send unsolicited emails asking families for personal financial information or requesting money, gift cards or other funds in that manner.

"We want to make you aware of several fraudulent emails that have recently been sent to members of our community," Bragen wrote. "Please be cautious when receiving any email of this nature."

Families who receive a suspicious email claiming to be from a staff member are asked not to respond, click any links, or provide personal or financial information. Instead, the district asked that such messages be reported immediately to a child's school or to the superintendent's office.

"We appreciate your patience, understanding, and vigilance as we work to address this issue," Bragen wrote.
