Fundraiser Created To Help Son Of Woman Killed on Rt.1
A family friend set up a GoFundMe for George Smick to "assist him in his recovery."
SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — George Smick lost his mother Deborah on Dec. 15, just as a "massive" nor'easter was rolling into the state.
George and Deborah had been homeless for 10 months, and were living in their car. Their Ford Explorer had broken down at the Wendy's parking lot on Route 1. Deborah was struck and killed while crossing Route 1 at Deans Lane. George witnessed the collusion.
After Deborah and George's story was published, a family friend set up a fundraiser to help George.

The creator of the fundraiser, Joseph Jankowski, said the GoFundMe was set up "by his friends and community who genuinely want to assist him in his recovery."
The fundraiser aims to raise $10,000. As of Monday morning, they've raised $2,026.
Jankowski said "100% of donations will go straight to George to help him with financial costs and to find him the true home that his mom would want for George."
According to George, Deborah was a cancer survivor and a "single mother who was well-loved by her colleagues and customer." They were evicted from their North Brunswick home in February and were living in their Ford Explorer, while Deborah worked at Wendy's on Rt.1 and George worked at McDonald on Route. 18, East Brunswick.
