Grant Approved for Reichler Park Lights

Softball field improvements to be paid through open space funds.

With the South Brunswick girls softball program growing, the township be upgrading the playing fields to allow for night games. On Tuesday, the Township Council authorized the execution of an agreement with the county for the installation of lights at the  softball fields.

The plan will involve using a 50 percent match from the Middlesex County Open Space Trust Fund. The remaining money will come from the South Brunswick Open Space Trust Fund, thus the improvements will not have an impact on the municipal budget.

"We have about 400 to 500 girls in the program and their fields have never been updated," said Mayor Frank Gambatese at Tuesday's council meeting. "This goes a long way towards upgrading their fields."

"This project doesn't raise taxes and it has no impact on the general budget," said Public Affairs Coordinator Ron Schmalz last month.

"With the lights at Reichler Park, there has been more girls getting involved in the softball program over the last couple of years, so this allows that program to expand further with more options for the girls’ teams."

A timetable for the completion of the project has not yet been determined.
