Indoor Mask Mandates Will Continue In South Brunswick Schools

Social distancing and masking mandates inside classrooms will continue. The state has not removed indoor masking rules yet.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ —Although the CDC revised its guidelines on mask-wearing, and masks are no longer required for high school sporting events, inside the classrooms, the rules don’t change.

Students from South Brunswick school district will have to follow masking and social distancing protocols, Superintendent Scott Feder told parents.

“As we have shared with you all along, we must follow the direction provided by the State of New Jersey and as of today, we have not received any guidance from the Department of Education or the Department of Health regarding how this will impact schools,” Feder said in a letter to parents and guardians, last week.

He asked the school community to “continue to have your child wear a mask, distance, and follow all protocols until more direction is provided.”

Gov. Phil Murphy has stood firm on indoor masking mandates for the state and said it’s too early to drop them. One of the reasons cited by Murphy is that New Jersey still needs to get a large number of the state’s adult population vaccinated.

There are some towns where the vaccination rates are as low as 16 percent.

"Dr. Tony Fauci has said, even after the CDC's announcement, that widespread removal of mask mandates, especially indoors, could reignite the virus," Murphy said in a press conference.

Another reason Murphy cited was the virus continues to be more lethal inside than it is outside, and that's not good when the majority of New Jersey residents are still not vaccinated, he said.

“We are in the home stretch for this school year and appreciate your understanding and support,” Feder said.
