NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — Good news for North and South Brunswick residents who have long bemoaned the lack of a decent supermarket in the area: A Lidl grocery store will open next year in the North Brunswick Shopping Center, in the location of the former A&P.

The news was announced by North Brunswick Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack Thursday.

The North Brunswick A&P closed in 2015 following bankruptcy of the chain. Construction is currently underway to subdivide the former A&P location, providing Lidl with more than 26,000 square feet of retail space. The North Brunswick Lidl is scheduled to open next spring.

“I know this is welcoming news to many in our community, particularly our senior citizens who live in close proximity to the shopping center and have missed the opportunity to walk to a local grocery store,” said Mayor Womack in a statement.

Lidl is a German grocery store company similar to counterpart Aldi, another discount grocer. There are currently three Lidl stores operating in New Jersey and the North Brunswick store will be the fourth.
