Overall, the project will consist of four phases — Conceptual Engineering, Preliminary Engineering, Final Engineering, and finally Construction Assistance Services.

“We all know this is a critically needed transportation hub on the Northeast Corridor. And today, we are one step closer to getting this project completed, moving expeditiously and with quality as a priority,” Nara said.

The appointment of a design and engineering consultant marks a new step in the long-awaited project along Route. 1 in North Brunswick Township.

“Middlesex County; the New Jersey Department of Transportation; NJ TRANSIT; North Brunswick Township; and the MCIA will work very hard with WSP USA to ensure the train station reflects the community it is going to serve,” said, Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, NJDOT Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Chair.

The train station will be located at North Brunswick Transit Village off Route. 1, on the Northeast Corridor Line, one of NJ Transit's busiest lines.

James Polos, MCIA Executive Director, said WSP will be an “an invaluable, world-class partner” to help move along this long-awaited project. "We are pleased to welcome WSP USA to join our team.”

WSP USA has been in business for almost 130 years, “starting with the first subway system back in New York City in the 1870s,” said Andy Paluri, PE, PTOE, WSP USA Vice President/Mid-Atlantic District Leader.

He said the company is looking forward to parnter with MCIA, NJ Transit and North Brunswick to “meet not only the project expectations but also the expectations of the local community.”

In October last year, the county announced it was moving forward with the design, engineering and construction of train station, and welcomed proposals for design and engineering.

Middlesex County is partnering with the New Jersey Department of Transportation, NJ Transit, North Brunswick Township, and MCIA for the project.

Polos said they have scheduled 12 months for phase II, and it will take around 18 months to get through 30 percent of the design of the project.

As for the completion of the project, Polos said they need to get through some of the design phase first to actually give an estimated completion time.

“With respect to completion of the project, I think that will largely be driven by the ultimate design, and the integrate integration and connectivity within the Northeast Corridor before we could actually ascertain what the completion schedule would be,” he said.

Currently, there’s a Target, Costco with a gas station, a Panera Bread, Marriott and Greene Turtle around the project property, along with condominium units.
