Middlesex Co. Man Charged With Murder In Death Of Mother: Prosecutor

A Plainsboro man has been charged with murder after his mother succumbed to injures from an assault, authorities said.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — A 44-year-old Plainsboro man has been charged with murder in the death of his mother, who died in the hospital after being assaulted, authorities said.

Herbert Roberts, 44, of Plainsboro was initially charged with attempted murder and the charges were upgraded after the death of his 73-year-old mother, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Eamon Blanchard of the Plainsboro Police Department said.

On Aug. 18 around 4:14 p.m., authorities received a 911 call reporting a break in and that someone was severely injured. On arrival, Plainsboro Police found Herbert unharmed and Beverly Roberts, 73, of Princeton Junction, covered in blood, with severe injuries to her head and eyes, Ciccone said.

She was flown to the Newark University Hospital for treatment and remained in critical condition for a week. On Aug. 25 Beverly succumbed to her injuries.

According to investigation, there was no break in. Authorities said it was Herbert who assaulted Beverly. Herbert was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree attempted murder. He has been held since his arrest. The charged were upgraded to first-degree murder, Ciccone said.
