Middlesex Co. Sheriff's Office To Hold 12th Civilian Academy This Fall

The Middlesex County Sheriff's Office will hold its 12th Annual Sheriff's Civilian Academy for county residents this fall, with applications being accepted now.

The academy is designed to educate residents on the functions, duties and responsibilities of the Sheriff's Office. It will be held at the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Training Center in Edison, with the first session scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. Classes will continue weekly on Thursdays, with one Saturday class included, concluding with a graduation ceremony Thursday, Nov. 19.

Each session will highlight a different function of the Sheriff's Office, including K-9 operations, transportation, fingerprinting, D.A.R.E., courts, civil process and foreclosures. Participants will also tour the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office and the Main Courthouse in New Brunswick.

"The Sheriff's Civilian Academy is a wonderful way for us to reach out to the residents of Middlesex County," Sheriff Scott said. "It is part of our mission to protect and serve the public. Our goal is to give Academy participants a better understanding of the role of the Sheriff's Office that they can take back into their communities."

Applications are due no later than Aug. 12 and will be used to determine suitability for the program. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside in Middlesex County, have no felony convictions, not be wanted for any crime, and submit to a limited background check.
