Middlesex County Resident Charged With Murdering Man At Restaurant

A New Brunswick man fatally stabbed another local man during a dispute at a restaurant in the city, authorities said.

A New Brunswick man fatally stabbed a 20-year-old man during a dispute at a Suydam Street restaurant in the city, authorities said.

Edgar Martinez, 32, of New Brunswick, was charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to a news release from Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and New Brunswick Police Director Anthony A. Caputo.

Martinez killed Jovanni Garcia-­Elvira, 20, of New Brunswick, during a dispute at El Costeno shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday.

Garcia-­Elvira was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in the city, where he was pronounced dead at 5 a.m. Saturday.

An autopsy showed he died of multiple stab wounds.

Martinez was taken into custody shortly after the dispute, as he walked down Joyce Kilmer Avenue in New Brunswick.

He is now being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick, with bail set at $2 million.

New Brunswick Detective Thierry Lemmerling and Detective Gregory Morris of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office handled the investigation.

The investigation is continuing.
