Middlesex County Voters Heavily Favored Clinton Over Trump

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ— A traditionally blue county in a traditionally blue state, it should come as no surprise that Middlesex County voters overwhelmingly turned out for Hillary Clinton.

With all towns reporting a total of 188,386 votes, Clinton took home 59% of the vote, giving her a comfortable lead over President-elect Donald Trump's 38%. Third party candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein each earned enough to earn percentages: Johnson had 2% of the vote, and Stein had 1%. (The other five third party candidates listed did not earn enough votes to be given a percentage.)

While sizeable, the lead is smaller than other Democratic nominees have seen in the past. President Obama received 63% of 2012, and 60% in 2008. The last time Middlesex County voted in favor of the Republican candidate was during Ronald Reagan's historic landslide election in 1988 (he received 54% of the vote).

Clinton's lead was established by larger towns that gave her large-margin wins, like Edison, Woodbridge, and South Brunswick, but nearly a third of all Middlesex County towns voted in favor of Trump.

Most of the seven towns that favorited Trump were smaller, with the exception of Old Bridge.

Although Middlesex County might not have predicted the presidency, it did predict the results of both New Jersey ballot questions. Voters knocked down a plan to build casinos outside of Atlantic City, 77% to 23%, and approved a question about how to allocate funds from the gas tax by a thin margin: 51% yes, and 49% no.
