With Ordinance Amendment, South Brunswick Seeks To Increase Towing Fees

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — Towing companies will have to pay up more money to operate in the township, if South Brunswick moves forward with a new ordinance.

During the last meeting, Council discussed amending and supplementing a chapter in a current ordinance to include more fees for towing companies.

According to the township attorney, South Brunswick decided to take this step to ensure the fees are fair to “people who are towed and to the people who are doing the towing.”

Councilman Kenneth Bierman said the township’s towing ordinance has not been updated in the past 10 years.

“The last time the fees were updated was about 10 years ago,” Bierman said.

“So in 10 years with inflation, especially in the past year, it was time to look at this ordinance.”

To make amendments to the ordinance, officials looked at other townships to learn more, Bierman said.

Officials studied similar ordinances in Monroe, North Brunswick, West Windsor and Plainsboro.

“We are not higher than anyone around us,” Bierman said. “We also got a copy of the state towing contract for the turnpike and the parkway. And that's what we based our heavy duty on. So we're within anything in the state and we're not going to exceed that.”

The councilman said officials will include verbiage in the amendment that will ensure the township can't exceed what the state exceeds in terms of fees for the turnpike and the parkway.

The ordinance will be introduced at the next council meeting and more details on the fee structures will be available then.
