Rabid Bat Found In South Brunswick, Health Officials Urge Caution

The bat was captured in the area of Ridge Road and Green Ridge Lane. No exposures were reported.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — The South Brunswick Health Department on Wednesday confirmed that a bat captured in the area of Ridge Road and Green Ridge Lane tested positive for rabies.

On May 14, a resident’s dog captured the bat which was retrieved by South Brunswick Animal Control and taken to the New Jersey Department of Health Laboratory.

On Wednesday, the state laboratory reported that the bat tested positive for rabies.

This is the first rabid animal reported in the Township and the third within Middlesex County this year.

No exposures were reported.

The health department has asked residents to report animals showing signs of unusual behavior to the South Brunswick Police Department at (732) 329-4646.

Additionally, residents should avoid contact with wild animals and immediately report any bites from wild or domestic animals to the health department and consult a physician immediately.
