Rt. 1 Safer Travel Initiative Drives Down Middlesex Co. Traffic Fatalities

Fatal crashes in Middlesex County fell 11 percent in 2025, but 4 deaths already recorded in 2026 are prompting expanded patrols along Rt. 1.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera announced that a countywide traffic safety initiative has led to a significant drop in road fatalities, with motor vehicle deaths falling 20 percent from 2024 to 2025.

According to the prosecutor's office, traffic fatalities in Middlesex County declined from 60 in 2024 to 48 in 2025. Fatal crashes fell from 54 to 48 over the same period, an 11 percent reduction.

Officials attributed the improvement in part to the Route 1 Safer Travel Initiative, a data-driven, multi-agency enforcement effort launched in response to rising roadway deaths in the county.

Despite the year-over-year progress, officials said four fatal crashes have already been recorded in the county so far in 2026, prompting participating agencies to increase enforcement and expand high-visibility patrols into additional areas identified as high-incident crash corridors.

On Jan. 30, high-visibility patrols were conducted along Route 1 through Woodbridge, Edison, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, South Brunswick, and Plainsboro. The operation yielded 320 traffic stops and 306 summonses issued.

The initiative brings together the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office, and the police departments of Woodbridge, Edison, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, South Brunswick, and Plainsboro. The agencies form a multi-jurisdictional task force that conducts coordinated, high-visibility traffic enforcement throughout the county.

U.S. Route 1 remains a primary focus of the initiative due to its high congestion, heavy commercial traffic volume, and history of serious crashes. Enforcement efforts target the most dangerous driving behaviors, including excessive speeding, aggressive driving, and distracted driving.

Officials said crash data from the NJDOT, motor vehicle crash reports, traffic citations, and other sources are used to identify high-incident corridors and guide both enforcement activity and safety-related infrastructure improvements.

The Route 1 Safer Travel Initiative aligns with Middlesex County's Vision Zero Action Plan, which officials describe as the first countywide Vision Zero plan in New Jersey. The county was recognized with the State of New Jersey's Complete Streets Excellence Award in 2023 for its leadership in advancing transportation safety.
