Rutgers Graduation Ceremonies Expected To Cause Traffic Delays Sunday And Monday

Motorists can expect heavy traffic Sunday and Monday when Rutgers University holds its graduation ceremonies.

There are about 11,850 graduates in New Brunswick, and estimates indicate as many as 40,000 people may attend the ceremonies, a Rutgers news release said.

The 249th commencement ceremony begins 12:30 p.m. Sunday at High Point Solutions Stadium on the Busch Campus in Piscataway.

The Rutgers University-New Brunswick ceremony is expected to end around 2 p.m. It will “be followed by collegiate and departmental convocations and receptions on the Busch and Livingston campuses in Piscataway, and on the College Avenue and Cook/Douglass campuses in New Brunswick,’’ the news release said.

The School of Arts and Sciences’ convocation is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. the stadium.

Drivers can expect delays on local streets and Route 18 near New Brunswick and Piscataway. Among the streets expected to have traffic delays are: College Avenue, George Street, River Road, Hoes Lane, Metlars Lane and the John Lynch and Landing Lane bridges.

Also, this weekend, about a block from the stadium, the St. George Greek Orthodox Church will hold its 42nd annual Greek Festival, a popular event that also draws crowds to the area.

On Monday, at Rutgers:

  • The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy’s convocation will begin at 10 a.m. in the College Avenue Gym.
  • The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences’ convocation is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on the Cook Campus.
  • The School of Social Work will hold its convocation at 3 p.m. in the RAC on the Livingston Campus.
  • The Graduate School of Education will hold its ceremony at 4:30 p.m. in the College Avenue Gym.
  • The Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School will hold its graduation at 6 p.m. in the State Theatre in New Brunswick.

Drivers can expect traffic on Nichol Avenue, College Farm Road, Ryders Lane and George Street.
