South Brunswick High freshman writes about the upcoming "We Bleed Black and Gold" blood drive at the high school.

South Brunswick, NJ - Amber Bhandari, a freshman at South Brunswick High School, wrote about the upcoming "We Bleed Black and Gold" blood drive for her journalism class:

You are invited to our “We Bleed Black and Gold” event at SBHS. Please join our students, staff and administration for our first community/high school blood drive on May 23rd and 24th from 7:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Bagels, Dunkin' Donuts, pizza, and Rita’s will be provided! Let's all “Bleed Black and Gold” together as one community.

The “We Bleed Black And Gold Event” is an event that the students in the American Red Cross club are doing. The host who is running it is Mrs. Donna Moreen, the South Brunswick High School Nurse. This event takes place at SBHS May 23rd-24th from 7:30 a.m. -1:15 p.m. This blood drive is meant as a way for kids to get involved with and connect with their community.

The blood drive is not only for the students, but also for the whole South Brunswick community.

This is the first community blood drive the school has done this year. Future upcoming blood drive events will be in June and August. The school wants to increase the amount of blood they collect, and Mrs. Moreen’s goal is to get a total of 200 pints of blood. (hopefully 100 pints of blood each day.)

SBHS is competing against all high schools in New Jersey to see who can collect the most blood. If SBHS wins, four students from the school will get to go on the field at a Yankee’s game in June and hold a huge banner representing the school. If that's not great enough, SBHS is providing Dunkin Donuts, pizza and Rita’s Italian ice. For juniors and seniors, there will be a raffle for two free prom tickets. This event will occur every year starting from now on!

Beside all of that, the blood drive benefits a large amount of people.

“This event absolutely benefits others, for example cancer patients, motorcycle/car accident victims and surgery patients need the blood,” Mrs. Moreen says. She hopes that everyone in the blood drive will help collect more blood each year starting from now on.

For more information, call 732-329-4044 Extension 3264. Mrs. Moreen is located on the first floor next to hands hallway. If anyone wants to donate blood please feel free to call Mrs. Moreen to make an appointment.
