SBHS Swimmer Competes at YMCA National Championships

South Brunswick High School senior Tyler Blackburn recently competed at the 2012 YMCA Short Course National Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

South Brunswick's swam in the 2012 YMCA Short Course National Championships. This year’s Nationals were held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, NC from April 2 through April 5.

The Greensboro Aquatic Center, which opened in August 2011, is a 78,323-square foot, state-of-the-art facility with nearly a million gallons of water and a seating capacity of 2,500. The GAC brings together all major aquatic sports – competitive swimming and diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and other unique sports - all in one venue. It's considered the premier sports and entertainment facility in the Southeast.

This year’s theme was Stock Car Racing for the parade of athletes as part of the opening ceremonies.  In total there were 1,513 swimmers representing 213 YMCA’s from 27 different states. Tyler was one of five swimmers from the Hamilton Y Aquatic Club.  In total, 18 YMCA teams from New Jersey were at Nationals.

Tyler swam the 500 freestyle (time 4:59.56), 200 freestyle (time 1:49.54) and the 100 freestyle (time 51.76) and was part of the 200 medley relay.

Tyler, a resident of Dayton, is a senior at South Brunswick High School. He was part of the Varsity swim team for four years. He currently holds the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, and the 200 freestyle relay school records.

Tyler will continue swimming at the collegiate level. He committed to swim in October to the University of Tampa. The University of Tampa competes at the NCAA Division II Level and is a member of the Sunshine State Conference.
