South Brunswick Celebrates Black History Month With Program On War Hero Billy Lee

Historical society's virtual event spotlights Washington's celebrated valet and area residents who served during the American Revolution.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — The South Brunswick Historical Society will host a virtual program on William "Billy" Lee, George Washington's valet, and local Revolutionary War heroes on Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m.

The online presentation, part of the Black History Month programming, will explore the story of Lee, a formerly enslaved man who served Washington from 1768 to 1799, and other area residents who fought during the American Revolution.

Lee accompanied Washington throughout the Revolutionary War, managing his personal affairs and attending to his daily needs. He joined Washington on hunting trips and political ventures, including during the First Continental Congress and Washington's presidency, according to the historical society.

Soldiers and colleagues regarded Lee as a celebrity during the era. He was with Washington during the general's campaign through central New Jersey and likely passed through areas that today comprise South Brunswick Township, the society said.

The presentation will also highlight contributions of other local Revolutionary War figures, including John Brant and Henry Higbey, who called South Brunswick home.
