South Brunswick Girls Lacrosse Shines With All-Stars

Viking girls fill GMC post-season team, Jenna Bussiere named Player of the Year, Kelly O'Brien named Defensive Player of the Year, John Coppola named Coach of the Year

Thanks to a little bonus action, the South Brunswick High School girls lacrosse team got a great finish to its season.

After the team won its division and the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament, South Brunswick was defeated in the states, finishing with a record of 17-2.

Thanks to the way it played all season, South Brunswick was able to land more players on the Greater Middlesex Conference All-Star team than even start on a lacrosse team.

Kelly O'Brien was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Jenna Bussiere, who had 60 goals and 8 assists, was named the Player of the Year. John Coppola was named Coach of the Year.

"The only thing we didn't get was Offensive Player of the Year," Coppola said. "We were well represented."

Cara Bagley (a junior on the attack), Rachel Shaffer (a junior defender), Dana Piemonte (a senior defender), Kelly O'Laughlin (a junior defender) and Olivia Kaczowski (a junior defender) were named to the GMC Second Team.

"It was a great year," Coppola said. "The kids were fun to coach and they worked hard. We had a strong season.

"We had records on offense for points. We had records on defense for points allowed. We were the county champs and had 17 wins. Our only two losses were  both by a goal. We were in every game. Unfortunately, it ended a little short for us. But overall, it was a very strong year."
