While the East Brunswick High School girls tennis team won the Greater Middlesex Conference tournament again, South Brunswick High School certainly did a lot to close the gap.
South Brunswick scored 12 points to place second in the tournament. East Brunswick scored 17 points on the way to its sixth straight championship.
"It was our best team finish in the last six years," South Brunswick Coach Nancy McDonald said of the tournament, which concluded this past Monday at Thomas Edison Park in Edison.

"Tanvi Parmar and Chental Song Bembry used consistency and control to defeat East Brunswick and win South Brunswick's only championship," McDonald said.

The GMC championship at first doubles also featured teams from East Brunswick and South Brunswick. East Brunswick's Lisa Zhang and Adelina Adbulia defeated South Brunswick's Alex Zaros and Julie Sendner, 6-2, 7-5.
"Alex Zaros and Julie Sendner battled in the final against East Brunswick, but just fell short," McDonald said.
Tanya Krishnakumar placed fourth at second singles.
"She gained great experience playing some top notch players," McDonald said.
Avni Bali (first singles) and Mara Stagari (third singles) also managed to win at least one match for South Brunswick.
McDonald was pleased with the effort of her entire team.
"(The girls at) all the positions contributed points toward the team standings," McDonald said.
South Brunswick is 5-1 in the regular season. It has recorded wins against Old Bridge (4-1), Piscataway (4-1), Edison (5-0), North Brunswick (5-0) and Old Bridge (5-0). Its lone loss was 3-2 to JP Stevens.
"The team looks to continue to improve and prepare for state team play, which begins on October 9," McDonald said.
