South Brunswick Girls Win GMC Track for Sixth Time in a Row

Boys place fourth, with Alston winning high jump.

The 2012 Greater Middlesex Conference track meet was one to remember for the South Brunswick High School girls team.

Then again, it was also kind of hard to forget the previous five.

"The girls team won the title for the sixth straight year," South Brunswick Coach Stefan Moorhead noted of the event held Saturday in Toms River. "The girls team had a great meet, as the 82 points we scored was much better than what I expected we could do."

South Brunswick won five of the nine events and scored at least a point in the other four as well.

And the best news may be the fact South Brunswick shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

"We had at least one member from each class -- freshman through senior -- score points," Moorhead said. "It was definitely a well-rounded, total team effort."

As good as the entire team was, this was a special meet for Cayla DelPiano, who won the 800 (2:17.33) and 1600 (5:17.48). Del Piano won the 1600 for the third straight year, setting the meet record in the process.

Del Piano also joined Julia Lekht, Aspen McDonald and Rochelle McDonald in winning the 4x400 relay in a time of 4:10.93.

"Our individual standout was clearly Cayla," Moorhead noted. "She had an outstanding meet, and has now won six individual GMC indoor titles."

Lindsay Carbone won the pole vault with a height of 9' 6".

Nateya Harris won the shot put with a distance of 31' 9 1/2".

"We had a surprise victory from Nateya Harris in the shot put, who won by a mere half inch when she threw her farthest throw on her sixth and final attempt," Moorhead said. "It was a personal best by a foot."

Aspen McMillan won three medals. In addition to helping the relay team to a win, she was second in the 55 hurdles (8.79) and third in the 55 (7.58). Both were personal bests.

Lekht was third in the 55 hurdles with a personal best of 8.93.

Alicia Osley placed third in the 400 with a time of 1:00.88. She hurt her hamstring in the race and was unable to compete in any other events.

Lindsay Del Piano placed second in the pole vault, clearing 8' 6". Savannah Barton was fourth with a height of 8 feet.

Nicolette Mateescu was third in the 3200 with a time of 11:53.58. Zenzali Lael was fourth in the 3200 with a personal best time of 12:05.14.

Alyssa McFarlane was third in the shot with a distance of 31' 3".

Marissa Cavett was sixth in the high jump with a height of 4' 6".

"We also had many other athletes who had personal bests, which is what we hope to see at a championship meet," Moorhead said. "This meet should give the girls confidence heading into the remainder of our season."

The South Brunswick boys placed fourth with a total of 40 points.

Jaleel Alston won the high jump with a height of 6' 2".

Kaseem Davis was third in the high jump at 6 feet. Christian Larbie was fourth with a height of 5' 10".

"Jaleel had a nice break-through with his win in the high jump, which was a great event for us, as we scored 19 points and had all three of our athletes earn medals," Moorhead said.

Jose Baxter, Tre Tisdale, Davis and Matt Tamasi combined to place fourth in the 4x400 (3:34.93). Baxter added a fifth in the 55 hurdles (7.97) and Tisdale a sixth in the 400 (53.05).

Adam Dickert was third in the shot with a distance of 42' 2 3/4".

Ishaan Goel was fourth in the 1600 with a time of 4:36.17.

Chris Barrood was fourth in the 800 (2:03.69). Mo Ziab was fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:05.07.

Nick Carbone was sixth in the pole vault with a height of 9' 6".

"We had a total of 11 athletes earn medals, which is a good number, but we didn't have enough of the top-3 places that would have earned big points for us," Moorhead noted.
