South Brunswick Honors Vietnam Veteran With Street Sign Dedication

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — On Saturday, South Brunswick paid tribute to local Vietnam War veteran Fred M. Benjamin with a street sign dedication ceremony.
The ceremony was held at the intersection of Stanley Avenue and Hazel Court in Dayton.
Benjamin was honored for his distinguished service record and decades of community involvement since settling in the township.

Benjamin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on Feb. 4, 1966, completing his basic training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He served in active combat during the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged on June 25, 1969.
His military service earned him numerous commendations, including two Purple Hearts, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and two Good Conduct Medals.

Born in New York in 1946, Benjamin has been a Dayton resident since 1985, contributing nearly four decades of service to the community. He remains active in veteran organizations as a current member of American Legion Post 401 and a lifetime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
The dedication ceremony drew a significant gathering of community members, with Benjamin joined by his wife June, along with numerous family members, friends, and neighbors. Township leadership was well-represented, with Mayor Charlie Carley, Deputy Mayor Ken Bierman, Councilwoman Jo Hochman, and Councilwoman Archana Grover participating in the tribute.
These street sign dedications serve as permanent reminders of the sacrifices made by local veterans, ensuring their service is remembered by current and future generations of South Brunswick residents.
