South Brunswick PD To Crack Down On Distracted Drivers In April

Beginning April 1 through the end of the month, law enforcement will target motorists engaged in dangerous distracted driving.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - The South Brunswick Police Department will be cracking down on distracted drivers during the month of April, authorities said. The enforcement is part of New Jersey’s UDrive. UText. UPay. campaign.

Beginning April 1 through the end of the month, the law enforcement initiative will target motorists engaged in dangerous distracted driving behavior, like talking on hand-held cell phones and sending text messages while driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report, 3,142 people were killed in distracted driving crashes and an estimated 400,000 people were injured in 2019 alone.

In New Jersey, driver inattention is the most frequent cause of fatal and incapacitating crashes, authorities said. In NJ, this rate is seven times higher than the total crashes cited for unsafe speed over the five-year period from 2015 to 2019.

Driver inattention caused nearly 49 percent of NJ crashes in 2019.

New Jersey is one of eight states nationally to receive federal funds this year to tackle driver distraction. The funding will be used for police overtime enforcement grants at the local level as well as a statewide multimedia public awareness campaign on the issue.
