South Brunswick Redistricting Update: Letters Out, Info Session Set For Crossroads North

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — South Brunswick School District is moving quickly to support families affected by its sweeping attendance boundary overhaul, Superintendent Bernard Bragen told the Board of Education Thursday. Personalized assignment letters have already been delivered to every impacted household ahead of schedule, Bragen said.

"All families with a child impacted by redistricting now have received direct communication from us regarding their child's assignment," Bragen said at the May 8 board meeting. "This was completed ahead of our anticipated May 15 timeline to ensure families have ample time to prepare for September."

The letters follow the district's April 23 presentation of its redistricting plan, which reshuffles attendance boundaries for the first time in decades as South Brunswick braces for a projected influx of more than 1,600 new students driven by large-scale residential development concentrated on one side of Route 1.

The plan directly affects approximately 284 students currently enrolled in kindergarten through fourth grade, who will attend a different elementary school beginning in the fall, along with about 53 rising fifth graders who will start middle school at a newly redistricted building.

To help families navigate the transition, the district will host an in-person support session on Tuesday, May 12, at 6 p.m. at Crossroads North Middle School. Central office staff and school-based leadership teams will walk families through transition plans put in place for the 2026-2027 school year and answer questions.

Bragen said the district's redistricting page at sbschools.org is now live and includes a high-resolution attendance map, a street-by-street school assignment listing, a detailed FAQ and additional transition resources. A full community update was also distributed Thursday through the district's weekly districtwide newsletter.

"We remain committed to making this transition as smooth and as supportive as possible for all students and families," Bragen said.

The redistricting plan was driven in part by the Beekman development — formerly known as South Brunswick Center — which alone accounts for approximately 1,776 approved residential units, or about 63 percent of all approved units in the township, and falls within the Brooks Crossing Elementary School attendance zone. Without boundary changes, officials have said, Brooks Crossing would have faced a projected influx of 446 additional students from new developments while other schools with capacity sat underutilized.
