Students Target Distracted Driving Through PSA In South Brunswick

South Brunswick Helping Hands Club's "Mind On The Road, Hands On The Wheel" campaign educates students on the dangers of distracted driving.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — Throughout the month of April, cops around New Jersey are cracking down on distracted drivers. And South Brunswick students are helping the local police department take their message to peers.

Members of the South Brunswick Helping Hands Club (SBHHC) have launched the “Mind On The Road, Hands On The Wheel” campaign to educate students on the dangers of distracted driving.

Sheena Agarwal, Vice President and Ananya Kulkarni, the Public Relations Chair of SBHHC gave the community a presentation on their campaign, during the BOE meeting held last week.

“As a club, we have created a distracted driving campaign and collaborated with the NJ Brain Injury Alliance to keep our student body as safe as possible," Agarwal said. "Throughout this campaign, we are advocating for students to hold true to our slogan which is to keep their minds on the road and their hands on the wheel."

The students said they learned about distracted driving from their school resource officer and decided to take the message to their peers. To help get their message through, the students are holding booths during school lunches and giving out bracelets and pins with slogans on them.

"We are encouraging classmates to click a picture with one of our fun frames and hope that this engagement will help our message stay with them when they are on the road," Agarwal said.

The South Brunswick Helping Hands Club is a student-run community service-based club of 50 members at the high school. The students help with various activities through the community. They've donated to Toys for Tots, animal shelters, collected food for the local pantry, and more.
