Mothers and daughters having dinner together to celebrate Mother’s Day is pretty common this time of year, unless you are a member of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. Most of the players on the team have not seen their moms on Mother’s Day for years due to their game schedule. One of the team members has not spent a Mother’s Day with her mom in 14 years.

Watch the truly touching reactions of the players when their moms surprised them during a team dinner meeting in San Jose last Saturday. As the moms entered the banquet room, they were met with gasps, smiles and tears followed by countless hugs.

“Tonight I have never been more surprised,” said one of the players.

U.S. Soccer flew the moms from all over the country to Northern California to surprise their daughters in honor of the Mother’s Day holiday. The following day, for the first time in the history of the women’s games, the team took to the field while walking proudly alongside their moms, before taking on Ireland at the Avaya Stadium in San Jose.

The team is comprised of 23 women from all over the country, including midfielder Heather O’Reilly of East Brunswick. She is one of four New Jersey natives on the team. The team will be taking part in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup series in Canada this summer.
