SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – The local police department is investigating the theft of mail from postal mailboxes outside Dayton and Kendall Park Post Office, authorities said Tuesday.

A resident reported finding mail in the road off Broadway Road around 12 p.m. on Tuesday, police said. Officer Gerald Sarno took the mail and spoke with two residents who said they had placed their mail in the mailbox in front of the Dayton Post Office.

South Brunswick officers then went to the post office and discovered a piece of paper with sticky material inside the opening of the mailbox. According to the initial investigation, the paper appeared to be a bug trap, police said.

Officers also went to the Kendall Park Post Office and discovered something similar — the postal mailbox outside the post office had an opened bug trap in the lid.

Between 7 p.m. on Monday and 11 a.m. on Tuesday, suspects used the traps to fish mail out of the mailboxes. It is unclear if the thefts extended to other towns. The United States Postal Inspector was notified and investigation is on.
