The Legacy of Six Mile Run Church

Part three of a three-part column.

Many long time families in the South Brunswick and Franklin communities have been a part of the Six Mile Run Church including, Van Dyck, Cortelyou, Voorhees, DeHart, Striker and many others.

With roots as deep as 1703, this church was an anchor for the community. The location was originally considered Elm Ridge, which now only exists in the name of a cemetery, Elm Ridge Cemetery on Route 27.

The original church site was one mile east of the current church site. In 1766, that building was replaced with a new church on the current site. In 1817, that building was replaced by a larger church until the fire in 1879, when the current church was constructed.

The church is an example of Carpenter Gothic Revival style, which carried jig sawn details by using the newly created steam-powered scroll saw that allowed craftsmen to experiment in new designs and copy Gothic patterns.

The church still carries many of those ideas in the look it has today. The church continued to add on in 1907 and 1958 as the local community kept growing. Today the congregation is one of 950 congregations of the Reformed church across America.
