Township Seeks to Sanitize Gyms

Fitness centers required to have sanitizing agents on hand to clean equipment.

After complaints from residents over health concerns at local fitness centers, the township has taken action to improve sanitary conditions for exercise equipment.

The South Brunswick Township Council voted unanimously at its most recent meeting to pass an ordinance requiring sanitizing agents and supplies to be available at local fitness centers and gyms.

The South Brunswick Advisory Board of Health responded to complaints from residents about the issue and passed along recommendations to have sanitary wipes placed near exercise equipment for cleaning after usage.

"We had some people come to the Board of Health meeting to talk about this," said Councilman John O'Sullivan. "The citizens of this town wanted something done, so the township is doing something about it."

The ordinance passed a first reading on Aug. 14. It will return for a second reading and public hearing on Sept. 4.
