SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — The South Brunswick Police Department on Tuesday announced it was conducting a month-long truck crackdown around town. Officers will focus on reducing commercial vehicles in residential areas.

The first phase of this effort is focused on the Kendall Park section of town. Officers from the Traffic Safety Bureau and Patrol Bureau will be targeting traffic on New Road between Route 1 and Route 27.

Currently, town ordinance prohibits trucks over 36 tons (72,000 lbs) from traveling on new Road, except for local traffic.

"We conduct these campaigns to raise awareness of local ordinance restrictions on truck traffic. We don't want overweight trucks in residential neighborhoods that should not be there. They are only allowed to use the road if they are making a local delivery," said traffic bureau Sergeant Gary Holsten, who is heading the effort.

Message boards alerting trucks to the weight restrictions have already been placed in the enforcement zone.

The department said overweight vehicles cause damage to local and state roadways. They hope enforcement programs like this will increase awareness and promote commercial vehicle safety.
