White Castle Seeking Location on Route 1 in South Brunswick

Popular fast food restaurant eyes location on Route 1 south.

The fast food restaurant chain that introduced the famous "slider" to the world is seeking to move into South Brunswick.

An application filed with the South Brunswick Zoning Board of Adjustments will be heard on Thursday night from developer White Castle Systems, Inc.

The application seeks preliminary site plan approval with bulk variance relief in order to construct a 2,584-square foot restaurant with a drive-thru window on a 9.92-acre site in an area zoned for commercial use.

The restaurant would be located at 5053 Route 1 south.

A developer also recently filed an application for a The site would be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and employ six to eight people per shift, with about three shifts per 24 hours.

White Castle was founded in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas and had its "sliders" immortalized in the 2004 movie Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, where two inept stoners travel all over New Jersey on a quest for the burgers.

The application, carried over from May 24, is scheduled to be heard on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. in the South Brunswick Municipal Building.
