Willows Swim Team Opens Season with Busy Week

The Willows swim team started their 2011 season with a busy week, competing in three dual meets, netting a 2-1 record thus far.  

On Monday, the Willows traveled to Warren to swim against Round Top.  The Willows fell by a score of 121 to 154.    

Two days later, the Willows went to Cedar Hill and won the meet during the last relay by a score of 142 to 134. 

Finally, on Saturday the Willows hosted their first home meet against Rivercrest and swam to another victory with a score of 152 to 123. 

During the Rivercrest meet, four records were broken and a new event record was established.  First, Michael Wu broke the 11/12 boys 50 meter breastroke record with a time of 39.56, while Justin Atkinson broke the 13/14 boys 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:11.72. 

Andrew Kudwitt established a record for a new event, 13/18 boys 50 meter freestyle with a time of 26.10.  In addition, two boys relay records were shattered. 

First the 9/12 boys, Brian Hochman, Hunter Hazard, Chris Swierczek and Michael Wu swam the 200 meter free relay in record time, 2:23.05. 

Later in the meet, the 13/18 boys, Harrison Kudwitt, Justin Atkinson, Ryan Finch and Andrew Kudwitt did the same in 1:50.62.

The Willows are excited with their new team of coaches this season, two of whom are veteran Willows swimmers.  Head coaching is Bryan Dau.  He has an extensive swimming background, including Willows, Riptide and Hamilton Aquatics club teams, high school and college.  He swam competitively from the age of 6-years-old. 

During his senior year at Notre Dame High School, Dau was chosen to be the team captain.  Dau also swam for two years at Penn State. He graduated Penn State this year with a degree in Kinesiology and will be attending Drexel University in the fall to complete his doctoral degree in Physical Therapy.

Assisting Dau is Meredith Trabilsy and Abby Weingarten. Trabilsy swam for Cedar Hill Swim Club for 14 years.  In addition, she was a member of the Scarlett Aquatic Club and Somerset Valley YMCA.  After swimming for years, she now focuses on coaching.  She is currently attending Keene State College in New Hampshire, where she is studying elementary education and psychology. 

Lastly, Weingarten is using her swim knowledge to coach the 8/u age group.  Swimming for the Willows for 11 years, Weingarten also has South Brunswick High School and Riptide club swimming experience.   In addition, last year she swam for the Carnegie Mellon Tartans.
