Woman Stole from Family Member, 86, Prosecutor Says

She took $200,000 from a Monroe Township resident over a two-year period, prosecutors say.

Monroe Township, NJ - She stole from her own relative, prosecutors say, an 86-year-old Monroe Township resident.

Susan Obel, 61, of Brooklyn was arrested Wednesday, after police say she stole about $200,000 from her elderly relative over a two-year period.

Obel took the funds in various amounts between October 2013 and December 2015 from the 86-year-old, said Detective Brian Dziomba of the Monroe Township Police Department and Detective Linda Infusino of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

She used the money to purchase items as clothing and jewelry, and to help her buy real estate, they said.

Obel was charged with theft by deception, forgery, uttering a forged check, credit card theft, and unlawful use of a credit card. She was released from custody after posting a $75,000 bail.

She was charged following an investigation by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Elder Abuse and Exploitation Team, which is dedicated to curbing crimes committed against senior citizens.
