The Upward Trajectory of Emotional Wellness (UTEW) online series continues its mission of celebrating unsung champions who strengthen emotional resilience across our communities. On September 22, 2026 at noon, we proudly honor Lynette Sheard, a dynamic force in New Jersey's arts and mental health landscape.
As Director of the New Jersey Mental Health Players, Lynette brings compassion, creativity, and powerful storytelling to the forefront of emotional wellness. Her work as a vocalist, actor, producer, and vocal coach has touched countless lives — making her a true Champion of UTEW.
Hosted by Deacon Laverne S. Williams, this live webinar invites everyone to come together, learn, and be inspired. Whether you're seeking encouragement, community connection, or a deeper understanding of emotional resilience, this session offers something meaningful for all.
Lynette Sheard is a gifted, versatile vocalist and a deeply respected figure in New Jersey's arts and wellness communities. Known for her soulful interpretations, radiant stage presence, and wide stylistic range, she moves effortlessly through Jazz, Gospel, Soul, R&B, Blues, and theatrical performance — always bringing emotional depth and connection to the stage.
As Director of the New Jersey Mental Health Players, Lynette leads one of the state's most impactful community‑education ensembles, using performance to spark dialogue, build resilience, and support emotional wellness across diverse audiences.
Her artistic footprint spans many of New Jersey's most beloved cultural spaces. She is a featured performer in the Mt. Zion AME "Jesus & Jazz" series, where her uplifting blend of faith, artistry, and storytelling has become a signature element of the program. She also has had standout and sold out performances at many venues such NJPAC Newark North to Shore Festival, SOPAC Jamming in the Loft Series and this year and last years Morris Museum Back Deck, where her concerts — including the celebrated Bird & Dinah tribute — consistently draw packed houses and enthusiastic community response.
Lynette has graced major stages, hosted programs, and headlined numerous festivals and special events throughout the tri‑state area, including the Giralda Music & Arts Festival in Madison, NJ; the OSPAC Jazz Festival in West Orange, NJ; the Jazz, Health & Food Truck Festival in the City of Orange, NJ; and the Bradley Beach Jazz Festival along the Jersey Shore.
Her work as a vocal coach, actor, producer, and arts advocate further amplifies her impact, nurturing emerging talent and strengthening community through performance. Theater credits include principal roles in Dream Girls, Smokey Joe's Café, Ragtime, Swing, Aida, For Colored Girls, A Raisin in the Sun, and Avenue Q in which Broadway World declared that "she is fabulous with a voice that shakes the rafters" In 2017 she was inducted into the "Encyclopedia of Newark Jazz. Fun Fact, she was the undefeated West Orange Idol for 15 years.
