SPRINGFIELD, NJ — Retired Springfield Police Sgt. Angelo Bonavitacola, who served the township for 30 years as a bike patrol officer, DARE officer, and patrol sergeant, passed away early Tuesday morning after battling a long-term health illness. He was 59.
"It is with deep sorrow that the Springfield Police Department announces the passing of our retired friend and colleague, Sergeant Angelo Bonavitacola," the department said in a statement.
During his three decades on the force, Bonavitacola was remembered as someone who never lost sight of why he wore the badge. "His greatest motivation was to always help those around him, with a profound sincerity that was unmatched," the department said.
Colleagues described him as "a genuinely humble, caring, and loving police officer who never forgot his oath."
While his service record spanned multiple roles, the department said he "will be best remembered as a friend to any who were fortunate enough to know him."
"The Springfield Police Department will always remember his dedication and commitment to the Township of Springfield," officials said. "Rest in peace, Ang."
