SPRINGFIELD, NJ — A $1.6 million water-main replacement project is underway in Springfield, bringing several months of construction and possible traffic and water-service disruptions to three roads.
New Jersey American Water said work was expected to begin Monday along Colfax Road, from Short Hills Avenue to Denham Road; Denham Road, from Morrison Road to the dead end; and Donna Road, from Denham Road to the dead end.
Crews will replace 2,900 feet of aging pipe installed during the 1920s with new 8-inch ductile iron main. The project also includes renewing 74 utility-owned service lines and replacing three fire hydrants.
The company said the improvements are intended to "help improve service reliability" and increase water flow for residents and firefighters.
Work is expected to continue through the end of October, weather permitting. Crews are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend and evening work is not anticipated unless needed to keep the project on schedule.
For drivers, that may mean changing routes. Streets where construction is underway may be temporarily closed during working hours, with traffic control coordinated with Springfield officials. Motorists should follow posted signs and detours.
Residents will be able to reach their homes and driveways. New Jersey American Water said crews will clean work areas daily and install temporary restoration where digging is required. Permanent road restoration is expected after the ground settles.
Some households may experience water interruptions or discolored water when the new main and service lines are connected. Customers will receive 24 hours' notice before service-line work. Most interruptions should last 30 to 60 minutes.
"If this happens, run the water until it is clear," the company advised residents who notice discoloration.
