Construction Worker Falls 4 Stories Off Building, Dies In Union

The man was reportedly on the edge of the top of the building and was guiding a crane that was hoisting building materials to the top.

UNION, NJ — A construction worker died after falling from the top of a four-story building in Union on Tuesday, authorities report.

Workers at the site of the building at 968 Bonnel Ct. called 911 on March 11 at 10:47 a.m. reporting someone had fallen off the four-story new construction building that will be mix of retail and residential.

The man was reportedly on the edge of the top of the building and was guiding a crane that was hoisting building materials to the top when he lost his balance and fell to the ground, Union Township Police report.

Officers David Popick and Michael Beatty arrived first at the scene and immediately began CPR on the worker before Union Fire Department ambulance and Paramedics responded to the scene to help.

The man was transported to University Hospital in serious condition and he was pronounced dead at 11:42 a.m. by doctors at the hospital, police report.

The fatal victim appears to be in his late 20s. His identity is still being confirmed and the next of kin were being notified, police report.

The incident is being investigated by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and investigators from the Avenel office arrived on scene.

There does not appear to be any foul play and the work site has been shut down until the completion of the OSHA investigation, police said.
