Lunchtime Film Series at Springfield Public Library

"Best Picture Winners of Years Past" series continues on Monday, February 1st at 1:00 PM.

Though meant as a comedy, The Apartment seems more melancholy with each passing year. Jack Lemmon plays C.C. Baxter, an office worker who loans his apartment to philandering superiors for their romantic trysts. He soon finds himself sharing a girlfriend (Shirley MacLaine) with his callous boss (Fred MacMurray). Director / co-writer Billy Wilder claimed The Apartment was inspired by David Lean's "Brief Encounter" (another film in which two lovers meet at someone else's apartment). 125 minutes. Unrated.
